Welcome to Astro Oceanography the new and plausable area of Study, the scientific study of Extraterrestrial Seas, Oceans and large Liquid masses present upon Celestial objects throughout the Universe. Our own Planet Earth as we know has a great abundance of Water, most of the Earths surface is covered by it in it's various States be it in Liquid, Solid and Gaseous form. Water itself a key factor and component of the evolution of life on Earth, in turn a component of life itself upon this Planet. H2O appears in it's various states, in it's liquid state appearing in varying Salinities, Suspensions and concentrations. Water is a medium in which many live, virtually all depend upon and is key to our Planets Ecosystem, Sub Ecosystems and beyond. When we think of Oceans here on Earth we picture extremely large Tidal Saline water masses like perhaps the Mighty Pacific or the Atlantic.
The beautiful field of Oceanography upon Earth is a fascinating field of Science but how are we to determine what classifies an Ocean on another world? The field of Astro Oceanography needs to consider other liquids outside of Saline (Sodium Chloride based) solutions on large scale liquid mass upon other Worlds as Oceans and Seas under it's vast umbrella aswell. Masses large enough to be affected by the gravitational pull of other Celestial objects, in affect leading to Tidal movement and level fluctuation. This being said Atmospheric pressure and state of the molecular composition can impose change upon a Body. There are many things to consider, the Core of the Planet, it's state, the Planets position, it's Gravitational field, Atmosphere and compositional characteristics, everything tuned to the Planets own evolutionary tuning creating the Worlds own state and fluctuational changes within it's own tollerances.
It is a difficult set of classifications to apply and will need application on a World by World basis. It will need to be applied on a scale specific to a World in order to indeed determine what liquid body falls under each heading. In turn what makes an Ocean, Sea, Lake, Pond and Pool of the highly Abundant liquid or hypothetically speaking 'liquids' appearing in various solutions/salinities upon the Celestial object in question. I will myself give more thought to this area but hypothetically for now I will call this the Astro Oceano Scale of Planets.
As we venture ever further into our Own Galaxy and beyond, further and further into the Universe we realise our Sciences need to evolve too. As our technology continues to advance, allowing us pictures and real delayed time Data from Alien Worlds, the field of Astro Oceanography itself needs to begin it's own evolvutionary path to embrace the New frontiers ahead. Our understanding of Oceanography in relevance to the Earth is continually evolving but the Birth of Astro Oceanography starts here thus I present it as a plausable New field.
There are so many variables to consider when proffering this subject, what actually is an Alien Ocean? There are numerous liquids and the possibility of varying compositions vast. As a subject we consider Oceanography to be the study of Saline Water bodies but in the instance of Astro Oceanography we consider the expanse of any liquid which can be considered an Ocean to be viable under this banner. Space itself displays many similarities to that of an Ocean but due to it's state it is not and cannot in fact be classified as an Ocean. Space ' as we know it ' is a Gaseous environment without it's own Gravitational effect (hence observed Weightlessness ) within the Zone witnessed other than fields and movement eddies created by other Celestial objects and the charateristics of the Universe itself, it's centre, outward throw of Matter and alas movement of Matter through it. This being Sub Atomic, Atomic to the Macro Molecular and Object forming. We also have the Dark Matter, Anti Matter and Black Holes all having an effect on the Fabric of Space. I have my own Theories on the structure of the Universe and it's properties in relation to its very state but that is Astro Physics and not applicable here.
A gaseous state/environment is less dense than a Liquid state/environment hence the Compound/Elemental and Molecular state naturally occuring. The characteristics of Space itself leading to variations in Zone, leading to specific Zonational characteristcs alas environmental and thus the individual characteristics of that environment.
In relation to the life giving characteristics of an Ocean, Do we not as Mammalian lifeforms with lungs extract Oxygen from the Medium we inhabit, our environmental Medium being that of Air? Do Aquatic lifeforms extract Oxygen from within their own environment, namely the Aquatic environment, the Medium being Water? Are we actually living and breathing within a Vast Air Bubble created by and harnessed by our own Planets Gravity and Atmospheric layers? Space itself as a Medium is very interesting but that is for the other Sciences, Astro Oceanography has enough of a relevance in it's relation as an applied subject area to Liquid masses thus in their various states too as environments can and do fluctuate leading to differentiation in State. In regards to our own Oceans upon Earth, we witness Liquid, Solid and Gaseous states hence the relevance.
Astro Oceanography wow what an exciting New field of Science. We know liquids are a state for the majority of Elements and Compounds given the right temperature and conditions. Due to the abundance of Elements and Compounds throughout the Universe in varying states, would it not be conceivable for large liquid masses of varying compositions be a viable proposition as Oceans of? We know by Data relayed back from Probes, Satellites, Robotic Rovers and remote Science stations that there are such environments upon extraterrestrial Worlds where large Masses of Liquid occur. We already know there are probable Oceans of Liquid Methane and other Elemental compounds awaiting our observation, to then be explored, Analysed and understood.
Planets and objects reasonably close to us for example Saturns Moons and numerous others are very interesting. The Planet Europa is of significant interest due to what looks likely to be a Surface of Ice floating on top of an Ocean. This finding is amazing and on a Planet within our own Solar system, the future Scientific Missions to Europa will be fascinating. When we look at images of Europa we can see what looks to be fault lines, cracks in the surface leading to the Theory that there is an Oceanic layer beneath.
There are many other Worlds which are pushing Scientific Minds in many new avenues of thought.There are endless numbers of Planets occupying very different situations to that of Earths own, opening doors to New Worlds of thought and understanding. Mans evolution has taken it beyond the confines of Earth, this New Era of Space travel and exploration is upon us as a Human race, some of the greatest Discoveries to adorn the Human Mind are coming. It is a wonderous time to be alive, Earth the small jewel it is, one of Millions of Worlds inhabitting a Universe of infinite possibilities. Science has to evolve in order to progress along it's own evolutionary path, new Subject area will need to grow and embrace it's own evolution as we venture ever further.
Astro Oceanography will become an important and integral part of Science in the new Era of Man beyond Earth.
